It's Time to Bust Some Açaí Myths!
It’s time to bust some common myths on Açaí! Are Açaí bowls full of calories? Are they eco-friendly? Are they healthy? Read on to find out.
Let’s Start off with how to Actually Pronounce Açaí!
We’ve heard it all, and we really don’t mind how you say it, but technically it’s AH-SIGH-EE! It’s Portuguese, the ç (cedilla) and í changes it from AH-KAI to AH-SIGH-EE.
Myth 1: Açaí Bowls are full of Calories
It’s hard to give an accurate calorie count for an Açaí bowl, mainly as you can make them as indulgent or as healthy as you like. Let’s take a look at look at the main part, the Açaí:
• Sambazon Scoopable Açaí has 110 kcals per 100 gram serving, so 1/3 of the tub is only 140 kcals, which less than half an apple with some peanut butter on it!
• Sambazon Pure Unsweetened Açaí is 70 kcals per 100g sachet and has zero grams of sugar. If you’re keeping a close eye on calories you can track all things Sambazon here on My Fitness Pal.
Myth 2: Added Sugar Outweighs the Benefits of the Antioxidants and Healthy Omegas in Açaí
The sugar in our Original Blend Superfruit Packs and our Scoopable Açaí is unrefined, organic cane sugar. The Original Blend packs and Scoopable Açaí tubs contain 14g of unrefined sugar per 100g serving. Our Pure Unsweetened Açaí has zero grams of sugar, so if naturally low sugar is your thing you don’t have to worry! Check the Product page for the full breakdown.
We don’t think much could outweigh the delicious powers of Açaí, especially when it’s so high in antioxidants. Antioxidants tackle free radicals to help keep your defences high, just like blueberries, only tastier. Açaí also contains healthy Omegas 3,6, & 9, the champions of heart and brain health - think olive oil, walnuts or fish.
Myth 3: Açaí Must be Eaten with Toppings
Anyone that’s bought Scoopable, ready-to-eat Açaí knows that eating Açaí on its own is definitely a thing! You can eat straight from the tub or blend up a simple Açaí bowl with no toppings, like healthy (but delicious) purple ice cream, anything goes!
There’s no rules when it comes to toppings either, if you’re out of granola you could switch for some hemp seeds, oats, broken up brazil nuts or walnuts.
Myth 4: Açaí is Good for Weight Loss
Açaí made the headlines a few years back as an effective weight loss tool sold in pill form, now while Açaí is a nutrient-rich source of antioxidants, there is nothing magical about the fruit for weight loss. To lose weight, you need to combine a healthy lifestyle, physical exercise and nutritious food while restricting your calories. Açaí on it’s own won’t deliver miracles, but it’s definitely a healthy meal choice.
Myth 5: You Should Only eat Açai Bowls for Breakfast
Açaí bowls and smoothies can be eaten at any time of the day. Why not try a post work out Protein Açaí smoothie a quick and easy dinner on a sunny day or even a healthy night on the sofa with our Scoopable Açaí Let’s face it, it’s always a good time for Sambazon Açaí, and it can be enjoyed by everyone as it’s organic, fairtrade, vegan, gluten free and dairy free!
Myth 6: Açaí Bowls are Hard to Make
Açaí bowls aren’t hard to make, here’s a quick video on how to make an Açaí bowl
We get it, sometimes making those super thick Açaí bowls can be difficult without a powerful blender. Our two biggest tips for getting a thick, creamy Açaí bowl consistency is using as little liquid as possible (max 50 ml per bowl) and blend with frozen fruit such as banana or berries.
If you decide that blending really isn’t for you, or you don’t have a blender it’s OK, we’ve got you covered. You can now pick up our Scoopable (ready-to-eat) Sambazon Acaí in shops.
Myth 7: Açaí bowls can’t be Eco-friendly, they come from the Brazilian Amazon, Surely they cut down the Amazon to Cultivate the Crop?
This is a whopper of a myth! The Sambazon business model is based on a triple bottom line philosophy, which means we measure success socially, environmentally and economically. Everybody wins, from the forest itself, the grower communities, our employees and our customers.
We are directly protecting the Amazon Rainforest by giving the natural forest a monetary value. If the people living in this region can make a good sustainable living from the intact forest, there is less pressure to cut it down for lumber or farm the land for as short period of time before introducing cattle
Our certified organic and Fair Trade Acaí is hand harvested by local farmers which minimises the impact on the local eco-system. You can read-up on all our amazing work in the Amazon here.
Myth 8: The Açaí Growers and their Families in the Amazon are Exploited
It’s actually the opposite, we’re trying to use our business to combat challenges like poverty, malnutrition, inequality and deforestation. We invest up to 5% of our fruit purchases directly back into local communities, and with your help, we’ve been able to build schools, a library, a sports centre, renovate healthcare centres and improve access to healthcare.
Fair Trade is more than just a certification -- it allows us to help raise the standard of living for 20,000 Açaí family farmers.
Myth 9: Too Much Acaí will Make you Purple!
Thankfully this isn't true, otherwise we’d all be purple in the office!
You might be wondering how Açaí berries from the Brazilian Amazon become popular around the world. Our CEO, Ryan Black, created the company with his brother Jeremy and friend Skanda following a surf trip to Brazil in 1999. After tasting the berry for the first time they made it their mission to introduce Açaí to the rest of the world. Sambazon now supply premium, Fair Trade and Organic Açaí in 5 continents, 25+ countries, and in countless grocery stores, pop-ups, and cafes all across the globe.
Myth 10: Acaí is Hard to buy
